Rotometer - Recording of Rotation Activity for unrestrained mice

Product Code:43000

NEW VERSION WILL BE RELEASED SOON PLEASE NOTE: Current version of rotometer has been temporarily discontinued. Ugo Basile will not accept any order of this product with an immediate effect.

Counts rotations in unrestrained, free roaming mice. Popular method for screening the behavioral effects of drugs. Also for Parkinson’s Disease studies.

Automatically counts clockwise and counter clockwise rotations. Ugo Basile Original design – no tether required for the animal. Works with a magnet attached or injected into the mouse.

Model
Current version of rotometer has been temporarily discontinued.

Background

  • There are several well-characterized causes for animals to exhibit rotational behavior:
    • Uneven/unilateral higher expression of levels of neurotransmitters (such as GABA or dopamine).
    • Developmental anomalies
    • Anxiety/stress
    • Exposure to some drugs, or drug abuse, or drug withdrawal
    • Physical lesions
  • Traditionally rotation tests can be constrained by the use of tethers. Our original design measures unrestrained rotational behavior in a circular open field using the latest technologies that enable the arena to be quite large while keeping the magnet very small.

Automatic counter, easy to use

  • Automatically counts clockwise (CW) and counter clockwise (CCW) rotations in free-moving animals using a magnetic field detection system. Digital read-out displays accrued rotations. No restraints or jackets are used.
  • Quick and simple to use: no training required. Tests are conducted by simply attaching a tiny magnet (the size of a grain of rice) to the animal tail or nape.
  • For longer-term tests, we offer a syringe kit with small injectable magnets encapsulated within a proven biocompatible material that does not interfere with animal behavior. Magnets are easy to inject using the included animal ID transponder syringe.
  • Standalone turnkey system that also features Portable Memory Stick technology, USB interface and software for connection to PC.
  • The circular arena for mouse (or small rat) is 20cm diam. Clear Perspex cylinder enclosure is 25cm tall.

The Rotometer is widely used in research on motor assessment tests. Rotometer is also used in traumatic and acquired brain injury research and spinal cord injury research.
There are several well-characterized causes for animals to exhibit rotational behavior:
• Uneven/unilateral higher expression of levels of neurotransmitters (such as GABA or dopamine). Some brain tumors can cause aberrant expression levels to occur. Injury may also interfere with proper neurotransmitter expression, and/or cause some localized change in neurotransmitter expression
• Developmental anomalies can also cause rotational behavior
• Anxiety/stress may cause this aberrant behavior
• Exposure to some drugs, or drug abuse, or withdrawal from some drugs, all may have rotational sequelae.
• Physical lesions also can cause rotational behavior in an animal
To quantify rotational behavior in a freely moving animal is a significant development
